GENDER GAP IN EDUCATION
The gender gap in education is one of the most controversial
topics. Firstly, the biggest problem is in our thoughts. We have fixed and
biased ideas. For example, a woman’s duty is to raise her children or to take
care of them while a man is responsible for earning money. Likewise, women are
dependent on men and they need protection of them. Therefore, it is not
important that women be educated. Even if it changes in time, it is hard for
women to live in a male-dominated society. Moreover, the reason why most of the
girls who live in the East part of Turkey are not able to go to school lays
under this type of society. Parents teach their children the roles which the
society expects and they label them as you are a girl or you are a boy, and
this causes inequality between genders in terms of education. Secondly, women
are not regarded as authority when compared to men, but most people are not
aware of it since they see it normal. Namely, we learn to behave in a certain
way and it becomes our habit, inevitable part of our life. We feel as if it
were the right attitude. When we realize, we have already had an idea or a
belief shaped by the society. To sum up, there is gender gap in education since
we still have prejudiced ideas and beliefs shaped by the society about woman’s
and man’s role, and this influences the education of them even if we are
oblivious of it.
Dear Esra,
YanıtlaSilFirst of all, I have to say that I really appreciate that you have criticized the problem of sexism in the society and education system. I totally agree with you about this issue because, in my opinion, being casted a determined role by the society cannot be accepted for any woman. Your feminist perspective and proper language has developed your ideas very well. In addition, the correlation between doctrin of the society and gender gap in educational system has made your journal more effective. Thanks for pointing out this issue. :)
