WHAT DOES BEING A GOOD TEACHER REQUIRE?
When I, as a student, consider the characteristics of a good
teacher, I decide to divide these characteristics into three parts. Firstly, a
good teacher should have not only symphaty but also empathy for his/ her students.
He/ She should understand and care about his/ her students’ problems. Moreover,
he/ she should not forget the fact that he/ she has been a student once upon a
time. For example, one of my teachers used to ask whether we were okay or not
while we were studying for the exam. She showed that she cared about us, she
tried to make us relax. Second characteristic is related to teaching
strategies. Almost every teacher has adequate knowledge about the subject he/
she will teach, but some cannot transfer it efficiently. Therefore, a good
teacher should use right method both for the subject and the students’ needs so
that they can benefit from it. For instance, in my German classes, we memorized
every piece of information instead of trying to use language itself to improve
it, and we forgot it. However, if we listened or read the materials produced in
this language, we would learn more effectively and permanently. Thirdly, the
most significant characteristic of a good teacher is something which he/ she
should not possess. A good teacher should not have a high ego. Having
self-confidence is a necessary quality, but thinking that you are perfect and
being close to criticism are dangerous. Being friendly and modest and
communicating with his/ her students effectively make a teacher good and
respectable one. To sum up, having empathy and sympathy for his/ her students,
using suitable methods for them and not possessing a high ego account for the
characteristics of a good teacher.
